Carlo Castillo

Graduate student in Microbiology, Immunology, and Cancer Biology (MICaB), in the lab of Dr. Julia Willett.

Carlo is a graduate student in the Microbiology, Immunology, and Cancer Biology (MICaB) program. Prior to graduate school, he earned a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from The Ohio State University and worked as an IRTA post-baccalaureate research fellow at the NIH in the lab of Dr. Ian Myles, where he studied the skin microbiome's role in eczema. Carlo works in the lab of Julia Willett studying Enterococcus faecalis, a Gram-positive gut commensal which can become pathogenic and is a major concern in hospital settings due to its high antibiotic resistance. His work aims to characterize genes which enable E. faecalis' survival and persistence in the gut and understand factors which can turn it from a commensal to a pathogen. Carlo is an avid outdoorsman and enjoys hiking, camping, fishing and biking. He also enjoys playing soccer and exploring the Twin Cities restaurant scene.
